Montrose, Colorado: A former funeral home operator pleads guilty to stealing human remains and selling them, prosecutors say

According to a recently unsealed grand jury indictment, from 2010 through 2018, Hess and Koch operated Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors , which purported to provide burial and cremation services. Hess, and at times Koch, would meet with families seeking cremation services, and would offer to cremate the decedents’ bodies and provide the remains back to the families. SMFD would charge $1,000 or more for cremations, but many never occurred. Megan Hess, 45, a former funeral home owner pleaded guilty on Tuesday to mail fraud in a scheme where she dissected corpses and sold body parts without consent from the deceased's family. Both defendants have been charged with six counts of mail fraud and three counts of illegal transportation of hazardous materials.

Sunset Mesa Funeral Foundation did business as Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors in Montrose until 2018 when, after the FBI and state of Colorado served search warrants, it closed, as did the related business, Donor Services Inc. The Artrup case was one of six lawsuits filed against Sunset Mesa, and/or Hess, her parents and other parties, including companies said to have purchased human bodies and body parts from Hess’ Donor Services Inc. Of the six, the Artrup case is one of four to be brought by multiple parties, and is the fourth to result in a judgment against Sunset Mesa Funeral Foundation defendants. “This case concerns the extraordinary allegations that the defendants acted and conspired to steal and illicitly sell the bodies of the plaintiff’s loved ones while holding themselves out as a mortuary service,” Jackson wrote. Separate of the civil action, Hess and her mother have been federally indicted over an alleged scheme to acquire and sell human remains, which they deny.
